Announcement: Yasir Naqvi’s Climate Action Plan for Ottawa Centre

September 2, 2021

OTTAWA, September 2nd, 2021 – Yasir Naqvi, Liberal Candidate in Ottawa Centre, unveiled his Climate Action Plan for Ottawa Centre that will make Ottawa the greenest capital in the world. He was joined by Stewart Elgie, professor of law and economics at the University of Ottawa. He is the founder and chair of the Smart Prosperity Institute.

The Liberal Government has taken bold action to cut pollution and has made real progress in the fight against climate change, but we know that more must be done.

“Climate change is the greatest threat of our time. As for many parents, my children are my main priority. I will relentlessly fight for stronger action to ensure they live in a world with a healthy environment. As part of the Ontario Liberal government, I delivered on phasing-out coal-fired electricity plants that achieved the single largest greenhouse gas reduction in North America. I delivered on cleaning up the Ottawa River with the launch of the Ottawa River Action Plan providing us with a swimmable, drinkable, and fishable Ottawa River, for everyone. And, secured funding for clean transportation through investments in Ottawa’s LRT and Flora Footbridge,” Naqvi said.

If elected as the Ottawa Centre MP, Yasir Naqvi will work tirelessly to further strengthen the government’s climate action and make Ottawa the greenest capital in the world – and an even better place to live. He will:

  • Work to improve walking, cycling, and rolling infrastructure: Advocate for stable funding for our winter trails along the Ottawa River and extend to a full year pilot project to close Colonel By Drive to vehicle traffic.
  • Improve Ottawa Centre’s air quality: Working with community partners and advocates to identify bad air quality hotspots in Ottawa Centre, and work to reduce its health impacts through investments in better ventilation systems for schools, long term care homes and community buildings.
  • Work to enhance the green space in our community: Working with community partners and advocates to develop an urban tree canopy strategy to protect and expand our community’s trees and native plants.

“These actions — and more — will make Ottawa a cleaner, healthier and better place to live. Now is not the time to backtrack or delay. Please join me in this fight to tackle climate change by taking advantage of the programs the Liberal government offers such as buying an EV and retrofitting your house. We all have a part to play in Canada’s effort to reduce our emissions and make Ottawa the greenest capital in the world. Our kids’ future depends on it,” Naqvi said.

– Catherine McKenna, Former Minister of the Environment and Climate Change

“I’ve known Yasir Naqvi for over 10 years, I know he’s deeply committed to the environment. He was part of an Ontario government that reduced emissions, more than any jurisdiction in North America. We need that kind of dedication and action both nationally and locally here in Ottawa Centre.”
– Stewart Elgie, Director of University of Ottawa’s Institute of the Environment

Climate change, the number one issue, we need to make sure that we decarbonize our society. We’ve had all sorts of reports come out over the past couple of weeks that illustrate how dangerous climate change is. Climate change isn’t something that is going to happen, climate change is something that is happening right now. Wildfires out west, grain busting drought in the prairies, wet weather here in central Ontario. This is a real danger. Yasir is the guy!
